Stars Melt to Milk- Brittany Touris

“We were directionless, like the stars in the night sky, just floating up there.”- Janis, Stars Melt to Milk

Title: Stars Melt to Milk
Author: Brittany Touris
Publication Date: August 23, 2015
*I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Charlie James is nineteen and has no idea where his life is going. He wants to make his life worth something. He doesn’t want to work at another dead-end job, he wants to do something he loves. Janis, Charlie’s girlfriend, is on her way to achieving her dreams. She’s renting a studio where she teaches ballet and she’s making something of her life. As the young couple start heading down different paths, there relationship starts to suffer. Janis only wants to support Charlie, to help him achieve his dreams too, but Charlie doesn’t even know what he wants to do in life.

Then, Janis finds out that she is pregnant. She is excited and already loves her unborn child with all her heart. Charlie is scared, fearing that he won’t be a good enough father to his child. Will Charlie and Janis make it through this challenge, or will it end up tearing them apart?

The Cover: The title of this book was what drew me to it. It was different, a little metaphorical.

The Writing: I liked the writing in this book. I didn’t like the overall story (I’ll get to that later), but the writing was very authentic. There was no sugar-coated sweetness when it came to some parts, it got pretty dark which I appreciated because if your going to write a story about struggling and finding your way, I think it’s best to keep the sugar at a minimum.

The Characters: Let’s talk characters, I’m just going to say it; I did not like any of the characters in this book. I just could not relate to them. Charlie annoyed me a bit with his back and forth and indecisiveness. Just when I thought he was getting his shit together, he finds some way to screw it up. He was also a bit childish, even when the story fast-forwarded a few years, he was still the same selfish guy who didn’t want to take responsibility for his actions

I thought I would have at least liked Janis. She left home at a young age and was trying to make it on her own and start her own business, but she was flat, at some times even cold. I wanted more from her, some tears maybe? I also wished that when things came tumbling, she would have fought a little harder for her dreams.

The Issues: I had a few issues with this book. First, there was a small incident of cheating in this book and although I am not opposed to this theme in books, I thought that it was unnecessary. I felt a little awkward reading that chapter, even the character felt awkward, it just didn’t work. Another issue was I had was with the relationship in general between Janis and Charlie. They were constantly saying “I love you”, but I did not feel it between them. The relationship felt forced and I didn’t like them together.

I think this book has great potential, I just couldn’t relate to the story. I wanted to feel something, anything, but it didn’t happen and it was such a let down.

I'm Ari, a local NYC bibliophile and a forever daydreamer. You can usually find me with my nose buried in a book and my head up in the clouds. I am also a coffee addict and a chocolate connoisseur. I fell in love with the romance genre about three years ago and I haven't been able to stop reading about happily-ever-afters, which is ironic because I'm a bit of a cynical romantic in real life, haha. I hope you all enjoy my blog and fangirling with me about all the smutty reads!

  1. I love the cover of this book as well, it’s a nice bit of whimsy 😀 I am so sorry to hear that you could not connect to the characters, though. I also can’t stand cheating in fiction or in real life, so I think seeing it would really frustrate me.
