The following evening, Riley paced back and forth across his living room floor. He was dressed in a dark blue button-up, black jeans, and brown oxfords. His hair was combed to the side and he had all but doused an entire bottle of cologne onto his skin.
“Okay,” he said to himself. “Let’s go through this once more.” He made his way over to the mantle and looked at the mirror.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hello,” he replied to himself in a higher, more feminine tone of voice.
“I know we just met and all, but I was wondering if you’d like to have dinner with me?”
He shook his head in dissatisfaction. He tried again.
“Dahlia, you seem like a very lovely woman and I would like to get to know you better. Would you do me the honor of having dinner with me tonight?”
He grunted and then turned away from the mirror.
“This is stupid, I just met her yesterday. She doesn’t even know me, why would she agree to have dinner?”
But Riley wanted to know Dahlia. He wanted to know where she was from, if she had any pets, and where she went to school. He wanted to know what she liked to do, if she preferred mysteries or comedies, and if she had read any good books lately. He wanted to know if she was afraid of heights and if she had ever held a butterfly. He wanted to know the details that she had long tucked away in a high school yearbook, or a broken locket.
Riley was a bit overwhelmed by his feelings for Dahlia. But he knew there was no talking himself out of it. He had met her and now he wanted nothing more than to learn more about her. He took a quick glance in the mirror on the mantle, exhaled deeply, and made his way over to front door and across the street.
