Synopsis via Goodreads: My story isn’t a love story … not the typical kind anyway.
As a lawyer, I’m used to discovery, but I never saw this one coming.
Every day, River gives me ten reasons to stay away, and then eleven reasons why I can’t. Our relationship was to remain strictly business, or at least I tried.
Four years of marriage, and everything with Cole has changed. I never knew two people who lived together could be so distant. But I’m not ready to give up on him.
One man wants to break me.
The other is just trying to get even.
Both are lying to me.
That cover is PERFECT! The tagline for this book is on point because while the synopsis sounds like so many other books I’ve read before, the twist and turns in this book is what makes Marley’s story stand out from the rest.
After being married for a few years, the honeymoon phase is coming to an end and the passion that Marley once felt with Cole is slowly burning out. Trying desperately to keep the fire alive for the both of them, Marley finds herself being tempted by her newest client, River Holtz. With her marriage barely hanging on by a thread and River promising her everything she desires, Marley must choose between saving her marriage or giving into temptation.
This story is told from Marley’s POV and it is most definitely not an easy story to tell. It starts off like your typical contemporary romance, but once sh!t hits the fan, things turned dark pretty quickly. Marley’s story is truly heartbreaking. There were many moments where I had to stop reading because I could NOT handle what was going down. Honestly, I don’t even know how Marley could put up with any of things that went down because I seriously just wanted to hurt a few characters. I just could NOT!
Cheating is a major theme in this book and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I think the twist the author puts on this theme is what makes this book worth the read. I did NOT see PLOT TWIST coming! It was messed up, down right the lowest thing someone could do. Who even does that to another person, just for the sake of coming out on top?!
♥ Marley: I LOVE MARLEY! I wasn’t expecting to become so invested in her character, but I did and my heart went out to her. She did not deserve to be treated like that. AT ALL. She is such a strong character because I was expecting her to break down, but she didn’t. She kept her head held high and she actually ended up with the better end of the deal.
♥ Cole: I HATE COLE! He is such a manipulative ass! I can’t believe Marley even put up with that for all those years. The things he did as a husband is completely unforgivable. I thought he got off easy. I kind of want to run him over with River’s Ashton Martin!
♥ River: I am still on the fence about River. I spent the first half of the book hating him, but when his true intentions were revealed, I found it really hard to continue hating him (INTERNAL CONFLICT!). He completely surprised me, especially at the end. Although he too manipulated and used Marley for his own gains, he had a good reason for why he did the things he did and I don’t know if I can hate him for that.
Honestly, I had no issues with this book. I LOVED it that MUCH! I cried at the end, which I was not expecting. I can’t wait to re-read this book again, which will probably be sometime soon because did I mention I LOVED IT?
If your looking for a darker contemporary read with a twist I HIGHLY suggest you pick this book up. Also, if you haven’t check out any of Lisa De Jong’s works, I suggest you do so now!
