Synopsis via Goodreads: In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary. But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?
The cover is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love the purple detailing (my FAVORITE color!)
Phoebe Martins is ultimate bookworm. With her nose always buried in a book, she loves getting lost in a new world and fantasizing about a new book boyfriend. So when she learns that Dev, local cutie and clarinet whiz, has a crush on her, she’s not quite sure how to handle it. Channeling the confidence of her favorite heroines, she hopes to impress Dev with her new-found wit. But what happens when things don’t go according to plan: will Phoebe go back to her bookish world, or will the real thing be too hard to let go of?
This book was ADORABLE! It was FLUFFY, COTTON CANDY STATUS! It was definitely what I needed to get me out of my YA contemporary slump.
One thing I really liked about this book was how excerpts from Phoebe’s favorite books were inserted into the story. There were stories within a story! Although I was rooting for Phoebe to get the guy, I was also rooting for these fictional characters to find their happily ever after. The way Phoebe draws inspiration from these bookish relationships was clever because she eventually uses them to create her own “fictional” story of her and Dev.
Another thing I liked about this book were the FRIENDSHIPS. Phoebe has a eccentric group of friends and they support her no matter what. They help her with her with snagging the guy and they get her see that she is WORTH IT!
♥ Phoebe: I think it’s pretty safe to say that ALL of us bookworms can RELATE to Phoebe. She LOVES books and getting lost in a new world and she even uses them to help her tackle real life situations. Even though I thought it was great that Phoebe looked to her favorite heroines for inspiration, I was so EXCITED when she came to the realization that “BEING PHOEBE” was all she needed to do this whole time in order accomplish her goal. Being yourself gets you farther than being someone else.
♥ Dev: *cue the fangirling* Dev is Indian: HELLO DIVERSITY! It is so rare that I find myself being able to culturally relate to a character and I was SO THRILLED to see that. Dev is most definitely BOOK BOYFRIEND material. I loved how he would just pop up randomly in the middle of conversations and at the most awkward times. He’s a total charmer and I love his banters with Phoebe.
♥ Em: I LOVE Em! She is probably my favorite character throughout this book. She’s dramatic, spontaneous, an amateur matchmaker! Even though she can be a little pushy, I think Phoebe needed that push to get out of her comfort zone and out of her world of books. Without Em, there would probably be no plot for this book!
I really didn’t have any issues with this book. There were times where I was yelling at Phoebe for not picking up what Dev was putting down, but I think the slow development of the romance was needed because this is the FIRST book of many (I’m assuming) and if Dev and Phoebe got together too quickly, I don’t think I would have enjoyed this story as much as I did.
Overall, this was a enjoyable read! I laughed, I yelled at my eReader, I swooned over Dev! I’m EXCITED to see where this relationship goes in the next book and I HIGHLY recommend this ADORABLE debut to all the bookworms out there!
