Welcome back to:
Rants & Rambles is a weekly feature where I share my own personal thoughts and opinions about both bookish and blogging related topics. As stated, these are MY OWN opinions and while you can choose to disagree with it, I hope that you at least respect it.
This week on Rants & Rambles I want to discuss:
So remember a few weeks ago when I wrote a discussion asking “Are Standalones Becoming Extinct?” and I disclosed my slight obsession with secondary characters? No? WELL, I HAVE A SLIGHT OBSESSION! Okay, scratch that. My obsession is anything but slight. Do I have a problem? Yes! Do I want help for said problem?
Personally, I blame the growing popularity of series for my obsession with secondary characters. With series becoming a growing trend, authors are no longer writing stories with just two characters in mind. They are looking at a bigger picture, hoping to take a small idea and turn it into something more! That means creating more characters with their own stories that can be furthered developed in future installments. So long are the days where secondary characters stood in the background, waiting to be summoned by primary characters. Secondary characters are starting to steal the spotlight, demanding they get screen time too, and I think IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME SECONDARY CHARACTERS STEPPED UP AND MADE THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN! Here are a few reason why I like secondary characters and why we need them:
♥ VOICE OF REASON: I’ve found that secondary characters can sometimes be labeled as the “voice of reason”. When primary characters are in a bind and need help making tough decisions, they sometimes turn to their best friend for advice. Even when primary characters are thinking irrationally, secondary characters help to anchor them and “bring them back to Earth”. I’m actually quite fond of this role because I relate to it a lot. I’m the advice-giver among my friends and I’ve been known to keep my friends out of trouble a few times just like some of my favorite secondary characters.
♥ CAUSING CHAOS AT EVERY CORNER: This is something new to me since I started reading again, but I secondary characters have become bolder and are starting to stir up a lot of trouble in the books I’ve been reading. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve actually plotted out their deaths because they keep messing with my ship! Secondary characters are keeping us on our toes, doing all types of shit to keep us from having our HEAs. Some have even wreak so much havoc that we are left sitting at the edge of our seats, dying to know what happens next. I’m looking at you Brooke (Broken Prince)!
♥ SHENANIGANS & GAME-CHANGERS: I don’t know about y’all, but I love secondary characters who aren’t so serious and do silly things that make me laugh. Perfect example of this are my boys from the Off-Campus series. Dean Di-Laurentis comes to mind when I think of shenanigans because if you’ve read this series you know the amount of shenanigans he is involved in. I love his character so much and I hope he keeps on entertaining us in the final installment. Lysandra from the Throne of Glass series would be labeled as a “game-changer” character for me because her actions helped Aelin succeed in slaying the King. Seriously, she came out of nowhere and pulled some stunts I was not expecting and that is why she is my favorite character in this series.
♥ SECOND TIMES A CHARM: So I know that’s not the correct phrase, but there have been times where I am reading the first book in a series and I’m not really loving it, but I still decide to give the second book a chance because I really like those secondary characters from the first book. Majority of the times, I will actually end up liking the book that revolves around the secondary characters more than I did for the book that revolves around the primary characters. I don’t know what it is, but it’s happened a few times now and I just can’t get enough of these secondary characters. The only problem is that after their books ends, I rarely ever see them in future installments. *sigh*
I’m really thankful that authors are taking the time to expand the narratives of secondary characters. Love them or hate them, whether they are the best friend or the arch nemesis, secondary characters SHOULD matter and as readers we should give them as much attentions as we do with primary characters. Go ahead a take that spotlight secondary characters, YOU’VE EARNED IT!
That is all for this week’s Rants & Rambles. I hope you enjoyed my random thoughts!
How do you feel about secondary characters and do you have any favorites?
