The idea for this post came to me a few weeks back when I was reading an ARC and something happened in the book that made me roll my eyes. I started thinking about other things that annoyed me when it comes to romance books and now here we are! This is just the short list for things that irk my nerves while reading romance and without further ado…
Let’s get started!
HARDCOVER ROMANCE BOOKS
I personally believe that physical romance books should only be published in paperback format. I don’t know what it is, but reading a romance book in paperback format is so much more comfortable than reading it when it’s in hardcover. I know it’s been a trend for certain publishers to publish a romance book in hardcover and then a year later they will publish the book in paperback with a whole new cover, and most of the time the paperback cover isn’t as cute as the hardcover cover! I wanna know who thought this was a good marketing strategy to begin with because I truly hate it!
CAR CRASHES AS A PLOT TWIST
Car crashes are my most hated plot twists in romance books. I can’t stand it at all. I want to rage whenever I read a book where this happens. The thing is, after these car crashes happen, it only then that the hero/heroine realizes how much they truly care for the love interest. Then they end up at their bedside begging them to wake up from their coma so they can live happily ever after. Like are y’all for real?? The love interest got to be barely hanging on to life for the hero/heroine to have an epiphany and realize how much they need that person in their life after behaving like a total asshole the whole time?? I don’t understand why this is a trend and obviously it’s not going away anytime soon because I’m still reading romance books that use this twist.
UNNECESSARY ADDITIONS TO A SERIES
I guess it’s a trend that everyone character in a series get their own book now and if the author can’t find a way to work that character’s story into the current series, then they turn it into a spin-off series. YAY! (Note the sarcasm) I actually feel this way about a few popular series, and no, I’m not trying to shit on anyone’s parade, but sometimes less is more.
WHEN A SERIES STARTS OFF STRONG AND ENDS IN DISASTER
I feel like this is a given for pretty much everyone, but I totally hate it when I’m so in love with a series and then we get to the final book and it just has a shit ending. It’s like I invested all this time and money and my damn emotions to this series and then it got the nerve to do me dirty like this?? One of my favorite childhood series ended this way and I contemplate every year whether or not I should get rid of my physical copies of these books. But then I re-read the first eight books in this series and I remember why I love it so I just pretend the last book doesn’t exist, lol.
WHEN THE WORD “MOIST” IS USED DURING SEXY TIMES
*Shudders* I cringed just writing that one. I feel like the use of the word “moist” in any romance book is an unwritten forbidden rule, yet strangely I’ve read books where the words has actually be used. I’m not about to name drop any of the titles, but when I read those books I had to stop reading and then I just decided to skip all the other sexy times in the book. Like I’m not delusional, I know sex isn’t all rose petals and perfection, but like I don’t need to see the word moist during a sex scene. I just end up thinking of a dirty dishwasher sponge and I can’t deal.
WHEN ALTERNATIVE DESCRIPTORS ARE USED FOR SEX PARTS
I’m looking at you Pucked, Forever Pucked and Area 51! If you’ve read the Pucked series by Helena Hunting, then you know one of the main characters loves calling vaginas and penises everything but vaginas and penises. Who in the world thought it would be cute to refer to someone’s vagina as “beaver”?? Beavers aren’t even cute for fucks sake. Every other romance book I’ve read that does something similar to this one always has me wanting to throw my eReader across the room. We’re all grown ass adults reading these books so let’s stop with these wanna-be cute descriptors.
These are just a few pet peeves that I have when it comes to romance books. I’m pretty sure I could list more, but I’ll save that for another post. Let me know some of the things that irk your nerves while reading and if any of my peeves are your peeves too, feel free to rant away in the comments!
